The range of Ergon saddles can be broken down into categories which reflect the kind of riding you are doing. And the kind of bike you are doing it on.
There are mountain bike saddles (MTB) that have decent padding and a shorter nose. This accounts for you getting in and out of the saddle often as you shred the trails.
Ergon Mountain bike saddles:
There are Fitness saddles which are good for your getting around town bikes or commuting bikes. These saddles have a good amount of foam or gel in their composition. Fitness saddles aren’t designed for performance, they are designed for general comfort.
Ergon Fitness saddles:
Ergon also do great Touring saddles for long days on the bike. These are their plush saddles with gel & foam and a generally high profile seat. As you would expect to be sitting in your saddle a while on tour, you want comfort.
Ergon Touring saddles:
Ergon’s Allroad saddles are their all-rounder saddle. In their design they are closer to a road saddle but they have some comfort for riding off-road. If you have a gravel bike you know there can be a lot of ‘chatter’ and vibration when riding on unpaved surfaces. And especially if you do it for a long time. The allroad saddle options work on all roads!
Ergon’s Allroad & Gravel saddles:
Road saddles from Ergon are the slim, long nose & lightweight options. Saddles designed for road riding are made for your aggressive, forward position on the bike. So they are slim to allow your legs freedom of movement. And of course they are light weight.
Ergon’s Road saddles:
If you experience pain in the hand when riding your bike, especially if your ride a flat bar bike, then you are not alone. Your hands take a lot of the weight of your body on a bike, along with your sit bones on the saddle & your feet on the pedals. Leaning your body weight on your hands when they are gripping, and are at an angle to reach your brake & gear levers can not only fatigue your hands and wrists but it can cause nerve entrapment.
Nerve entrapment in the hands can feel like tingling fingers, tingling in the palms and pain or tingling feelings up the arm to the elbow. Eventually this can cause numbness in the hands or fingers; particularly the little and ring fingers. This effects your ability to grip the handlebar and operate your brakes or gears, making it an unsafe experience on your bike!
Ergon grips address this issue through simple ergonomics, they provide flat bar handlebar grips with a wide platform to rest the palm of your hand on while gripping, reducing the angle at which your hand rests. By reducing the severity of the angle that the wrist is positioned in when riding, entrapment of the nerve is released. A less severe angle reduces pain in the wrist and the wide hand platform makes a more comfortable gripping surface.
In addition to providing an ergonomically comfortable surface for the hands to rest on and to grip, Ergon grips in the GP2 & GP3 models have a mini-bar end to provide an alternative hand position when riding. Changing hand positions throughout the ride is an excellent way to reduce hand fatigue and pain, and for flat bar bikes this is an excellent solution.
