Are Kool Stop brake pads a good substitute for Shimano or SRAM brake pads?
The answer is yes, Kool Stop brake pads are a perfectly good substitute for your stock SRAM & Shimano pads. In fact we think they perform better. And that’s certainly what KS want – because they are specialist brake pad company.
This means you will often find your Shimano or SRAM brakes perform seemingly better with KS pads. This is because unlike big suppliers who make a lot of things well, KS do brake pads only. Their focus is on having a singular type of product, and they do it well.
Kool Stop pads come in several different types of compounds for different kinds of riding conditions and how you want your bike to feel. You might be finding your pads on your road bike are failing you under intense braking on a descent. It’s worth trying a sintered version of a Kool Stop pad if you want better performance.
A sintered pad has fins for more surface area on the backing plate of the pad. This increased surface area means that the heat from the friction of braking has more places to escape. This keeps your pads cooler and working better – and you’ll come to a Kool Stop (now you know why the name exists).
