Custom-Built Bicycle Wheels

Only wheels that are custom built by hand can provide exactly what you want: a unique combination of performance, durability, longevity, suppleness, lightness, style and even colour.

Wheel building and wheel truing are at the heart of the work we love at Abbotsford Cycles.

Every spoke in our hand-built wheels is checked with a gauge & a tensiometer, for correct, consistent, even tension, which is the key to performance of your wheelset in the long term.

While custom-built wheels are more expensive than factory-built wheels, hand-built wheels perform better and last longer under load.

We build a huge range of wheels; wheels with dynamo hubs, wheels for unicycles, cargo bike wheels, tricycle wheels, fat bike wheels, trailer wheels and with electric hubs & even wooden rims if that’s what you have!

You can book a wheel build for a same day service through our online booking system. It’s best to ensure that we have the parts required by calling us first on 9429 6889.

Spoke replacement

Usually we can replace a broken spoke and true a wheel on the same day. However, if we are busy it may take an extra day. If you need your bike/wheel back on the same day, call us first to check.

Respoking

It is not uncommon for the spokes on new bicycle wheels to fail early in their life. Perhaps a lower-quality spoke has been used on an otherwise good bike. Once one broken spoke has been repaired, a second or third failure suggests it is much more economic in time and money to bite the bullet and respoke completely.

It is worth considering Phil Wood single-butted spokes if the bicycle is a commuter or tourer, as the thicker 13g head confers much higher fatigue resistance, particularly appropriate on a rear wheel.

Spokes

Our workshop is one of only a few in Australia that incorporates a Phil Wood Spoke Cutting and Rolling machine. We can efficiently cut 14 gauge spokes to the required length, from Phil Wood blanks, in plain gauge, double butted and single butted.

We stock and recommend high-quality Phil Wood stainless steel spokes. The range includes both silver and black, lengths from 80mm to 310mm.

  • Plain 2mm 14 gauge, silver $2.00, black $2.50.
  • Lightweight double butted 2mm/1.8mm 14/15 gauge, silver $2.50, black $3.00 – minimum length 230mm.
  • Fatigue resistant single butted 2.3/2mm 13/14 gauge, silver $2.50, black $3.00.
  • Straight pull (head NOT J bend), silver $2.00, black $2.50.
  • Prices include silver 12mm brass nipples. Black are 40 cents each.

We can also access DT Swiss spokes (Champion, Competition, Alpine III and Revolution), in most sizes, colours and gauges, and both alloy and brass nipples, of various lengths (we hold limited stock of DT spokes).

We have found that brass nipples are far more practical than alloy nipples, unless weight is of utmost importance.

Rims

We commonly build up with brands such as Alex, DT Swiss, Mavic, Velocity and Araya. We can order in a wide range of brands and sizes depending on your needs. Give us a call or email anytime to discuss.

We can order older sizes such as 27″, 26″x 1 3/8, 28″ x 1 3/8 and 28″ x 1 1/2. Usually available within 2-3 days.

Hubs

We build with a comprehensive range of hubs including Novatec, Shimano, DT Swiss, Hope and Chris King. We also specialise in building and servicing internal geared hubs such as Sturmey Archer, Shimano Alfine and Rohloff.

What does it cost?

Wheel building costs $135 inc. GST per wheel. There is an extra cost for fitting wheels to a bicycle, including adjusting brake and gears, and an extra cost for building with a motor.
