Yup, having a bell on your bike is a legal requirement. That’s why all new bikes that are to be ridden on roads come with that same little plastic bell.
So if you have to have one, why not make it a nice one?
A common conversation we have in the shop is on how not to be obnoxious with your bell, but also use it as often as pedestrians need you to. To be honest, you can’t please everyone! There will be people who find it annoying or frightening for you to ring your bell when you come up on them. Even though you need to because they need to know you’re coming, even when it’s sign posted that you need to! Some people will get a fright when you ring it, and some will get angry after they get that fright. This is an unfortunate reality, but it isn’t a reason to NOT ring your bell.
We think as cyclists you’re probably used to people finding you an annoying road user. Or shared path user. Sadly this is our lot in life to be doing the fun and good thing of riding bikes. You won’t be able to keep everyone happy. But you will need to ring your bell sometimes. So get a nice one!
We recommend a Crane bell – especially in brass. Crane bells sound beautiful – musical, resonant and pleasant. They cut through general road and background noise because of how pleasant they are. And they carry a clear sound – making it easier for people who need to hear you…hear you coming!
Choose a brass bell where you can, it just sounds lighter & crisper due to the material nature of brass. You will of course usually find these are more expensive, again due to the material. And a good, strong striker for the bell will ensure it works for you for many years if not forever? That’s a stretch, but as long as you need it to!
