Brooks saddles are some of the most recognisable things in bikes – and you know why? Because they’ve been making them for over 100 years! (159 years in fact, if it’s still 2025 when you read this).
A leather saddle was the original & best solution for a comfortable seat on a bike. Before this – by which we mean 1865 – the solution for a saddle was a lot of things. Sometimes it was webbing straps, sometimes it was cold hard metal.
The introduction of a leather saddle made sitting on the good old Safety Bike a pleasant experience. And of course this pre-dates padded lycra outfits.
Leather saddles are the original knicks! Forget a chamois, forget sheepskin covers, you just need a leather saddle. You know how comfortable a worn-in pair of leather shoes are. That’s the effect of a well worn leather saddle on your bike.
It’s comfy, it’s supportive, it’s particular to YOU. It has moulded through rides with your butt on it – it now suits your seated position on the bike. It suits your sit bones, your leg rotation (not always perfectly symmetrical you would notice). And it can be a very life-affirming experience to finally sit on a bike that feels good, and feels like yours.
We so often recommend that if you have the time & the funds to try a leather saddle, you should give it a shot. They look great on a really wide variety of bikes. And people know what the go is – you never have to feel awkward on a leather saddle. Because serious cyclists know the story. You’re in on that story too now. The original is always the best.
Choosing a leather saddle is less about measuring your sit bones & more about analysing your position. How do you ride your bike? Are you leaning forward quite far because you are riding in the drops? Is this a touring bike you have swept handlebars on and spend long days on? These questions will help you narrow down the width & length of the saddle. Because leather saddles come in short & narrow. These account for aggressive & relaxed riding positions. Giving your legs room to move!
And of course we can’t talk about Brooks without mentioning you can match your saddle with your bar tape. And it takes on this perfect patina when combined with the oils of your skin. Because leather benefits from the softening effect of oil. You’ll find the blackening & smoothing effect of your hands on the bars will make your bar tape so very comfy. And it will look cool, of course. Now people know you ride that bike a lot!
