Bikepacking cargo cages are useful in the extreme. It simply can’t be overstated how handy these will be on your next ride. So complete your set-up with a cage.
Cargo Cages are designed to either mount on your fork, or on the underside of your downtube. Not everyone is lucky enough to have bosses on their downtube or fork however. So there are solutions available for mounting these cages without accessory mounts.
Cargo Cages on your downtube are the ideal place to store heavy tools & spares, and things that you don’t need to hand. This is because your downtube cops a lot of dirt & mud on the ride. You don’t want to be pulling things in & out of this bag regularly, just because it’s awkward. People often use their downtube cargo cage to store a Nalgene or Growler. This is a great idea if you have the space, because of the lowered center of gravity & weight. If you don’t have the clearance then using your downtube space for tools is the next best recommendation.
Fork Cargo Cages are a lot more flexible. Their popularity means there are about a million options available to you! If you have accessory mounts you can go ahead and take your pick of the bunch. But if you aren’t blessed with these, or have a suspension fork there are options. Cargo Cages like the Ortlieb & Free Parable versions will clamp mount to your fork. A great place to store snacks, cooking gear, water or just about anything else.
