At Abbotsford Cycles we are all about good bike maintenance. And we only stock brands which we use ourselves on our own bikes. Or that we would be confident using on bikes that we service in the workshop. As such you will find only the best brands of bike lubes, cleaners and bicycle grease in our online store.
When it comes to tools and equipment for your spares kit, we have options. Famously reliable & used in every bicycle workshop in the world we have Park Tool. Pair their excellent pocket tools with Dynaplug for the best quality tubeless repair plugs & repair kits.
We stock the famous Boeshield T.9 Lube which is a highly reliable, long lasting chain lube for your bike, as well as the highly regarded Muc-Off brand of wet & dry lubricants which are race-quality at a great price. Muc-Off are also our preferred brand for bike cleaning & degreasing products. We use Muc-Off premium lubricants on bikes which come in for servicing in our workshop & highly recommend their products for complete at-home maintenance. Muc-Off make bike cleaning products, the tools and equipment you need to clean your drivetrain and parts, as well as the lubricants and greases you would need to apply after you have cleaned your bike.
Why clean your bike?
Cleaning your bike not only keeps your ride looking flash, but it also saves you money. A clean drivetrain will last you longer, and require less maintenance in the long run. If you ride on the roads, especially in the tumultuous weather of Melbourne then you know how much dirt & grime & general pollutants from cars is in those puddles you ride through! That black gunk that builds up on your cassette, chain & derailleur is working its way into your moving parts on your bike & increasing friction. Friction is not your friend on a bike! It slows you down & causes wear on your moving parts like your chain & jockey wheels, decreasing their functional life, meaning you will need to buy a new chain & cassette sooner.
Keep your drivetrain clean & free of grime with Muc-Off Nano-Cleaner. You can safely use this cleaner on your bike wheels, your chain, cassette, derailleurs and get in to the back of those seat-stays and seat post that gets the splashes from the mud. Use the Muc-Off detailing brush to make your life easier when cleaning the drivetrain, it’s long enough for you to keep your hands clean!
If your drivetrain is looking blackened with grime then it’s time for our personal favourite from the Muc-Off range, the Bio-Drivetrain Cleaner. This is a degreaser product like our workshop use to make service bikes shine, and you can use this cleaner to get fantastic results at home. If you are regularly lubricating your chain, degreasing your drivetrain will remove the excess that builds up on your jockey wheels. It’s a good idea to degrease your drivetrain after 6 lubrications of your chain.
What’s the best chain lube to use?
After you have cleaned your bike & degreased your drivetrain, its important to re-lubricate your chain to prevent squeaking & reduce friction. Lubricating your chain is about assessing the conditions you are primarily riding in. If you ride in all weathers, through the puddles & enjoy the rain then Muc-Off Wet Lube is for you. If you are riding your bike in the gravel, on the trails or only bringing out your bike when the weather is on your side, then the highly rated Muc-Off Dry Lube is your new best friend.
How often should you lube your chain?
Regularly lubricating your chain is key to keeping your bike running smoothly & safely! If you can hear your chain while you are riding, its time for some chain lube. If you find that changing gears when you are riding is slow & noisy, it’s time to lube your chain! In fact, if it’s been a few weeks, it’s time to lube your chain. It’s about as important as keeping air in your tyres, and it will save you money on replacing chains & drivetrain components every year.
Muc-off make great, affordable bike cleaning & bike maintenance products but they also cater to performance bikes. If you are riding triathlons, or racing time trial then using a high quality, high performance chain lube is important. Marginal gains make winners! We recommend anyone racing try Muc-Off C3 Ceramic Chain Lube. Performance lubricants have finer particles that find their way more easily into the pins & rollers of your chain, producing a better result. If you want to do everything you can to have your bike in top condition for your race, then you need a premium chain lube!
