Top tube packs are designed to mount on the frame of your bike near to your stem rather than the seat post. To avoid interference with your feet when standing in the frame. This is a great place to secure a small bag to your bike because every bike has a top tube. And many gravel bikes & touring bikes have top tube bosses for mounting water bottles. These can be used to mount ‘bolt-on style top tube packs.
Bolt-on top tube packs vs Velcro – which is better?
Apidura make both Velcro attachment top tube packs & bolt-on versions which have small holes in the base for you to run your bidon bolts through. Both mounting methods and variations on the top tube bag are secure. The bolt-on version of the Apidura top-tube pack does not use an additional strap around the stem. Whereas the Velcro mounting version does.
Top tube packs are a great option for anyone going on a long ride. Though Apidura make their bags for bikepacking &gravel racing, top tube bags are a great solution for a nice afternoon ride. If you don’t need to carry too much, just a phone, keys and a muesli bar, the top-tube bag is ideal.
The reason these bags are popular as an Audax or gravel racing bag is their aerodynamic position. As a commuter cyclist, this kind of bike bag is handy when you don’t need to take much in to work for the day.
Once your top-tube pack is secured to your frame, the waterproof zip is easily operable. Coming with a finger-loop for access without taking your eyes off the trail. The Apidura Racing Long Top Tube Pack is a favourite for those running a gravel bike. Or a mountain bike with their commonly sloped top tube for better stand over.
The Long top tube pack is about double the length of a standard version. And on smaller frames can fun the entire length of your top tube. This is a particularly great option if you won’t have much space in the main triangle of your frame for a frame bag. Such is often found in smaller frame sizes (48, 52). Moving the carrying capacity of your frame to the top of the triangle rather than inside it is often a good solution when you just need some space!

Are top tube packs universal?
Top tube packs are somewhat universal in that we don’t see too many bikes that can’t fit the bag. Usually this would only be a problem for you if you have very little stand-over on your bike. Alternatively if you have a very thick top tube as can be the case with carbon mountain bikes. Or step through frames with very strong sloping angles. For a very thick carbon top tube the solution can be as simple as extending the Velcro strapping used to secure the bag on the frame.
