Rear Racks are the workhorse of the bicycle world. You can fit pannier bags to them, strap your backpack to the top or just able tie a milk crate on there. Your rear rack is a real life-enhancer!
Unfortunately though, in the world of bikes it can be tricky to figure out whether a rack will fit your bike. And much as we wish we had a straight answer for you, we often need to see your bike to tell you if it can take a rack.
This is because your rear rack needs points of attachment to remain stable to carry your gear. And often these points of attachment are around your axle & up near your seat-post.
Now there are rear racks that will secure only to your seat stays – but this is for mountain bikes. And this exists because of mountain bikes! Dual suspension mountain bikes have a rear triangle that compresses towards & away from your bikes seat post. Meaning that a fixed rack would break when you rode over a rock or gutter. Your solution in this situation is an Aeroe spider rack which mounts to the stays only.
But back to rear racks for regular bikes! There are many options and a lot of this is to account for all the different bike geometries out there. So some racks will be able to fit on smaller wheels like 26″ size, and some will be designed to fit really wide 2.4″ tyres on a 29″ wheel.
Then there are variations of rear racks to suit mounting on eyelets within the bike frame, and others to mount onto the axle itself. Others will accommodate disc brake rotors with slightly wider profiles than a rim brake compatible rack. So you will need to know some things about your bike if you are about to embark on this rack journey.
So if you feel overwhelmed with the options, we completely understand! Give us the info on your bike, or better yet come to the shop with your bike! Everything that you see on our website (that says in stock of course) is in our Richmond shop at 27 Swan Street. So you will be able to see it in the flesh. And of course we can fit it to your bike for you.
