Brakes only slow you down! Even so, we stock a large range of rim brake pads from Koolstop to get you safely on the road again.
Finding the right pads for your rim brakes can be challenging, here we will break it down.
Firstly we have the brake pads that are designed to fit into a brake shoe. These types of brake shoes can be on any rim-brake bike from the 90s til today.
The Dura 2 pad is designed to work with your dual pivot brakes. Dual pivot brakes are commonly found on road bikes. Your brakes are dual pivot is they have two pivoting points on the arms of the caliper itself.
The Type 2 pad for brake shoes are for tradition V brakes. So if your brakes are not dual pivot, but do have a shoe, these are the one’s you will need.
Next we have the brake pads with the mounting bolt. This means you don’t have a brake shoe to slide a pad into. These come in loosely 3 categories.
The Supra 2 is just your basic V brake pad. A very common pad that will work for a simple set-up.
The Eagle 2 is for post mount cantilever brakes. Cantilever brakes are distinctive in style, so you will know if this is your brake set-up!
Then finally we have the MTB. Now these are just a standard V brake too. However they are a thicker pad for more serious braking power. This amount of stopping power is usually preferred on a mountain bike, thus the name.
The variations within these categories refer to the material of the pads themselves. So if you were concerned with protecting your rims from wear you may prefer a Salmon type pad. The Salmon pad will wear faster than a standard, but will cause less wear on your rim.
