Front Racks will change your cycling life – especially if you want to carry a pizza home.
If you’re one of the lucky people with a bike that can take a front rack, consider us jealous.
The options in front racks range from platforms that you can strap whatever you like to – such as a basket or a box. And then there are rack-basket combinations like the Pelago Rasket & the Wald baskets that come with fittings.
And then there are the touring specialist racks known as Lowriders. A lowrider is designed specifically for carrying front panniers down low on your front wheel. This is the most logical way to carry a heavy load on your very flexible front end of your bike.
These lovely racks are designed to fit to eyelets on the fork, which is common on a touring bike. And while lots of modern bikes have eyelets on their forks, this is thanks to the popularity of gravel riding. But unfortunately if you have a carbon fork with eyelets you won’t be able to use them for this. They are generally rated to hold a bidon only!
Commuter bike racks are generally the workhorses of the rack world. These are designed to carry your essential gear with a minimum of fuss.
When it comes to commuter front racks they are generally platform racks or racks that take a basket.
The Pelago Commuter Front Rack is a nice option as a platform for you to attach your own basket to. Or you can just strap your gear on. You can attach a Wald basket on there if you like.
This is also true of the Veloci Rocket Rack which is a neatly shaped front platform rack. Its rocket shape makes it neater in appearance on your bike when you don’t have anything on it. Which is nice!
The Pelago Rasket is the basket & front rack combo that takes the thinking out of things. And if you ever wanted to take your bike on weekend rides or bikepacking trips, you can fit panniers on it! Making it the most functional front rack we stock as Abbotsford Cycles.
The Wald basket is a dynamic one as well, in that you can choose the basket itself, or with the mounting hardware. So your Wald basket can be something to fit to your existing platform rack, or on a rear rack if you need one. But it can also be its own rack if you choose the option with fittings.
There are touring racks & there are racks for touring bikes let’s say. Touring bikes are becoming popular again, which is great! Because touring bikes are bristling with eyelets for mounting gear on to them.
If you have a steel touring bike with a steel fork then you have great rack options from Tubus. They make the Duo & the Tara touring racks for your fork which are designed to carry panniers. These are known as lowrider racks because they carry the load as low as possible. Meaning you will have more control over your steering with the added weight on the front end of your bike.
Both the Duo & the Tara can only carry panniers, as they don’t have a platform on top. They are simply a vehicle for front panniers! But due to the weight they are not possible to mount on carbon. So even if your bike has a carbon fork with mounting points on it, you will not be safe to mount these on there.
If you’re unsure of whether your fork is carbon or you were told by the bike shop when you bought it that you could, ask the manufacturer! Not all detailed specs for bikes are listed online so we would always recommend contacting the manufacturer. Confirming the load limit on the mounting points with the manufacturer means you won’t void your warranty. So we recommend this.
Suspension forks are the best, and you can mount an aeroe spider front rack to them! This is because aeroe racks use a clamping system rather than mounting to eyelets.
You can clamp them to your lower stanchions on your suspension fork – just don’t over-torque your bolts! And once again, if your fork is carbon, we recommend asking the manufacturer directly if you can clamp mount a rack to them. Because your suspension fork is designed to do a job really well – that’s give your bike suspension. And they are increasingly technical in how they achieve this, and made with materials that are as lightweight as possible. Meaning they might not be up to the task of carrying a lateral load.
But if you are able to mount an aeroe rack to your fork then you have the option of using it as a platform type rack or a pannier rack. The aeroe comes with a cradle option & a pannier rail option. Meaning you have a choice between a dry bag on top or panniers on the sides – or both!
