SPOKES AND WHEEL BUILDING
Spokes gradually become brittle as they flex in the spinning wheel, and can eventually break, usually where they are bent to go through the hub flange.
Labour for replacing a spoke and truing wheel is around $15, more if the wheel is in the bicycle.
If one or two spokes have been broken and replaced, the problem will often worsen as the older spokes break one by one. It is cheaper, and less time consuming for the cyclist, to then replace all the spokes. (Subject to both hub and rim still being in good condition - reasonable quality mass produced complete wheels are often cheaper than rebuilding with a new rim or hub.)
Labour charge for respoking a wheel is usually $25, plus $5 if the wheel is in the bicycle. Cost of spokes varies according to type selected, basic chrome plated are $10 per wheel, Swiss DT stainless steel plain gauge are .80c each (usually 32 or 34 per wheel). Lighter or heavier DT spokes are also available, at up to $2 each.
Normally we build rear wheels Cross 3 - each spoke crosses three others on the way from hub to rim. Front wheels either Cross 3 or for lighter wheels, radial.
